How Are These Four Numbers Calculated?

The life path number comes from your birth date. The expression number uses every letter in your full name. The soul urge isolates the vowels; the personality number uses the consonants. Each is reduced to a single digit, except for master numbers 11, 22, and 33, which stay put.

Worked example: "Jane Doe," born July 15, 1990, gets a life path of 5, an expression (destiny) number of 9, a soul urge of 8, and a personality number of 1. Try "Emma Stone," born April 17, 1993: life path 7, expression 33 (a master number, so it is not reduced further), soul urge 8, personality 7. And for the record, the byline on this page, Marcus Vance, born November 22, 1985 in this example, comes out with a life path of 11, another master number, plus an expression of 3, a soul urge of 1, and a personality number of 11 as well.

The name-based numbers all use the same Pythagorean letter table, documented in full on the Numerology Number Reference page: A, J, S are worth 1; B, K, T are 2; C, L, U are 3; D, M, V are 4; E, N, W are 5; F, O, X are 6; G, P, Y are 7; H, Q, Z are 8; and I, R are 9. The expression number sums every letter's value. The soul urge number sums only the vowels (a, e, i, o, u). The personality number sums everything else, the consonants. All three totals get reduced the same way the life path number does, by repeatedly adding digits until a single digit or a master number remains.

The four core numbers give you a fuller picture than any single figure alone. Whether the picture is accurate is, as always, a matter of personal judgement.

FAQs

What is a life path number?

Your birth date, reduced to a single digit (or a master number), said to describe your life's overarching direction. Numerology treats it as the most important of the four.

What is the expression number?

Also called the destiny number. It is calculated from every letter in your full birth name, converted to digits and reduced. The name on your birth certificate, not the one your friends use.

What is the soul urge number?

Calculated from the vowels in your name only. Numerology treats it as the number that points to what you want privately, as distinct from how you present yourself.

What are master numbers?

11, 22, and 33. In numerology these are not reduced to 2, 4, or 6. They carry their own meanings and are considered to carry more weight than the single digits.

Is numerology real?

No. Numerology is not a predictive system with a scientific basis. The arithmetic is real; the interpretations are traditional. Take what is useful, leave the rest.
