Numerology Number Reference: Pythagorean Letter Values and Life Path Method (2026)

The Pythagorean system assigns every letter a number from 1 to 9 in a repeating nine-letter cycle, and MysticalCalc's calculators reduce birth-date digits the same way to find a life path number, stopping early only at the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. This page documents the full letter-value table and the exact method, for reference and entertainment, not a scientific claim.

What are the Pythagorean letter values in numerology?

Pythagorean numerology, the version this site's calculators use, assigns every letter of the Latin alphabet a whole number from 1 to 9. The alphabet splits into a repeating nine-letter cycle: A, J and S equal 1; B, K and T equal 2; C, L and U equal 3; D, M and V equal 4; E, N and W equal 5; F, O and X equal 6; G, P and Y equal 7; H, Q and Z equal 8; and I and R equal 9. To find a name-based number, the Numerology Calculator converts every letter of a name to its value and adds them up: every letter for the expression number, vowels only for the soul urge number, consonants only for the personality number. Each total is then reduced the same way birth dates are, down to a single digit or a master number. The grouped table below is the summary; the full A-Z list is in the CSV.

How is a life path number calculated?

A life path number reduces a full birth date to a single digit, or to one of three master numbers, 11, 22 or 33, which are left intact rather than reduced further. MysticalCalc's Life Path Number Calculator and Numerology Calculator strip the dashes from the date, add every remaining digit together, then repeatedly add the digits of that running total until the result is 1 through 9, unless the total lands exactly on 11, 22 or 33 first. Example: April 17, 1993 becomes the digit string 19930417. Adding 1+9+9+3+0+4+1+7 gives 34. Adding 3+4 gives 7, a single digit, so the life path number is 7. The same reduce-and-sum method also produces the expression, soul urge and personality numbers from a name's letter values, and the master-number check runs at every step, not only the last one.

Methodology

This page documents a defined counting system, the Pythagorean letter-to-number mapping and the digit-reduction life path method, not an invented statistic. Both come directly from the JavaScript that powers MysticalCalc's Numerology Calculator and Life Path Number Calculator; view source on either page to check the constants against the table above. Pythagorean numerology, assigning A through I the values 1 through 9 and repeating the cycle through Z, is the standard system used by most Western numerology practices. It is a centuries-old tradition with no single dated origin, not a scientific measurement. The table and method above were checked against the live calculator code on July 2, 2026, and will be re-verified if the calculators change.

FAQs

Is the Pythagorean system the only numerology letter system?

No. Chaldean numerology assigns different letter values and skips the number 9 entirely. This page documents only the Pythagorean system, the one MysticalCalc's calculators use.

Where do these letter values come from?

Directly from the constants in MysticalCalc's own Numerology Calculator code, not from a third-party data set or survey.

Why are master numbers 11, 22 and 33 not reduced further?

Numerology tradition treats 11, 22 and 33 as already complete and especially significant, so the reduction stops the moment a running total lands exactly on one of them.

Is any of this scientifically proven?

No. Numerology has no peer-reviewed evidence behind it. This page documents a defined, traditional counting system for entertainment and reference, not a validated predictive method.
