Astrological compatibility is traditionally read through elemental groupings. Fire and Air signs tend to get along, as do Earth and Water. Same-element pairs share common ground. Fire-Water and Air-Earth pairings are considered the harder combinations, though harder does not mean impossible.
Worked examples straight from this tool: Aries and Leo, both Fire signs, score 90 out of 100 as a "Strong match" because they share a temperament. Aries paired with itself scores 85, "Like-minded match," a flat rule this calculator applies whenever both dropdowns hold the same sign. Aries and Cancer, Fire and Water, score 55, "Challenging," since those two elements traditionally pull in different directions. Gemini and Taurus, Air and Earth, land at the same 55, "Challenging," score for the same clashing-elements reason. Pisces and Scorpio, both Water, score 90 like the Fire-Fire pairing above. Any pairing that is neither same-element, a same-sign match, nor one of the two clash combinations (Fire-Water, Air-Earth) defaults to a middle "Balanced" reading at 70.
Behind the scenes, every one of the twelve signs is filed under exactly one of four elements: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are Fire; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are Earth; Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are Air; Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are Water. The calculator only ever looks at those two element labels, never the individual sign names, which is why Aries-Leo and Leo-Sagittarius both score the same 90 "Strong match": both pairs reduce to Fire-Fire under the hood.

By comparing the elements of both signs. Fire, Earth, Air, and Water each have traditional affinities and friction points with the others.
Same-element pairs are traditionally considered the most natural fit. Fire-Air and Earth-Water also tend to score well in classical readings.

No. Aries-Scorpio gives the same result as Scorpio-Aries. The comparison works both ways.
